How the Material Route Changes Cost and MOQ

The cost difference between GORE‑TEX and an open-market PU or TPU laminate cannot be reduced to a single price per meter.
The laminate matters, of course. But so do color availability, approved components, material minimums, garment construction, production handling and project validation.
A stock PU or TPU laminate may already be available in a workable face fabric and color. If it fits the design brief, the brand can avoid developing a new laminate.
A custom PU or TPU construction is different. The mill may need to dye the face fabric, source a particular backer or laminate the layers specifically for the order. That can make the material commitment much larger than the finished-garment order.
A GORE‑TEX route introduces another set of conditions. The brand cannot simply replace a specified material with a cheaper local option without affecting the product pathway and claim.

MOQ comes from three places
For membrane golf jackets, MOQ is rarely one number.
The first is the finished-garment MOQ: the quantity the apparel factory can cut, sew, finish and pack efficiently.
The second is the laminate or fabric MOQ: the minimum yardage required by the material supplier.
The third is the color and finishing MOQ: the quantity created by custom dyeing, backing, surface finishing or a new lamination run.
These minimums may be very different.
A factory might accept a relatively small garment order while the requested laminate requires enough material for several hundred jackets. The reverse can also happen: a suitable stock laminate may support a smaller launch because the material has already been produced.
For regular Qiandao programs using suitable available fabrics, planning may begin at 50 pieces per style for light customization and 100 pieces per style for full customization. Where PU and TPU Fit

PU and TPU are useful sourcing terms, but they do not describe one fixed performance level.
TPU means thermoplastic polyurethane, so it belongs to the wider polyurethane family. Suppliers may also use “PU” to describe a coating, a film or a laminated waterproof-breathable membrane.
Two fabrics carrying the same general description can have very different hand feel, stretch, durability and moisture-management performance.

A TPU membrane is not automatically better because it is TPU. A PU laminate is not automatically basic or low-quality because it is PU.

For a non-branded project, use the real technical description. “PU waterproof-breathable laminate” or “three-layer TPU laminate” gives the buyer something specific to verify.
Avoid using GORE‑TEX as shorthand for a performance level.
